Hi! My name is Curtis L. Hill, but you can call me Skipper.
Skipper is my nickname. My father was in the navy when I was born which will suffice as a brief explanation. Curtis Lee is my given name.
After obtaining a degree in theoretical mathematics from Auburn University I spent 35 years in the software industry. When I was young I always wanted to teach. Marriage and family led me into the software business as a means of making a living. But in 2012 I made the decision to pursue my desire to teach and began tutoring in 2013. I have loved every minute of it.
The first half of my professional career was focused on becoming an expert software technologist. The last twenty years were dedicated to leading teams of software engineers and developing my management skills. I rose to the Vice President level and managed international software engineering teams as large as 600 engineers. During my career I taught many aspects of software engineering to my fellow engineers. I also mentored many young managers as part of succession planning. These experiences confirmed that I really wanted to teach.
My tutoring style is upbeat, positive, and goal oriented. Once I understand the student's targets I strive to help the student achieve them. I focus on developing a positive relationship with the student from the very beginning. Being a life long learner I understand and appreciate the effort that goes into fully understanding a topic. I believe in the power of using Socratic questioning to evaluate whether or not the student truly understands a concept. I believe in homework. The Math section of my web site describes the relationship between homework students are given at school and the tutoring process. For SAT/ACT tutoring homework is central to the methodology.
My students present with a variety of learning targets and a wide range of learning differences. My instructional strategies are differentiated according to the needs of each individual. I adjust my pace and deliver examples that scaffold together in a way every student can understand.
I love tutoring and I can't wait to partner with you to help your child succeed.
